me and one of my cats, Treacle. (taken by elle)
recently i went to see Toy again which was good and we spoke to them for ages afterwards, they’re all really nice.
i’m listening to Bauhaus ‘In The Flat Field’ and Soap&Skin ‘Narrow’ quite a bit at the moment.
i went to see Los Camp again the other day which was fun.
i’ve been listening to loads of Soap&Skin, Antony & The Johnsons and some John Cage and Philip Glass, wishing i could play piano. and i cannot believe Anja Plaschg was so young in some of the earlier stuff. i feel so inadequate.
i bought Mount Kimbie’s album the other day which is good.
(dressing up. Elle took this photo of me.)
on Tuesday i went to see Xiu Xiu. it was good, they played with a band which was a change, although i do think i prefer them as a two-piece live. it was still very good though! they were supported by a band named Trumpets of Death who were also very good, and played an incredibly surreal set consisting of one long song which i can’t really explain. it had some noise/jazz sax solo’s which were very cool.
on Thursday i went to see WU LYF, who were also good and it was fun. beforehand we spoke to lots of homeless people, it’s horrible remembering the problems of first world poverty. they were supported by a man named Herb Diamante. which was.. surreal.
so i’ve had a week of strange pop music. and it occurred to me that in the past six days i’ve been drunk three times, neither of the times being on Friday or Saturday. how strange.
i’m going to see Los Camp! again next Monday which should be good.
the new Xiu Xiu album, Always, is amazing. i’m really looking forward seeing them on Tuesday.
a track by track of the new album has been published online, and i can’t help to wonder what has happened between Jamie Stewart and Zac Pennington/Sam Mickens.
he says that he now feels ‘resentment bordering on hate’ to the ‘two people who have since been given the boot for a long list of (very good) reasons’.
on ‘Chimneys Afire (Mickensian Suicide)’ he talks about the ‘suicide attempt on tour of [Sam Mickens, presumably] and the subsequent wrestle with the vanity inherent in an act like this’.
regardless, Xiu Xiu are great, as is the new album.
Pictures of Mike Hadreas, scanned from the new Dazed&Confused (thank youuu) which i’ve put into a little collage.
the new Perfume Genius album, ‘Put Your Back N 2 It’, is amazing.
if you’ve not heard it yet, you should. maybe i even prefer it to Learning.
i can’t wait to see him live again.
(if anyone buys it from ‘Fopp’ you’ll get a free poster. i also found Lynch’s ‘Mulholland Drive’ & ‘Inland Empire’ there for £7 collectively)
